Warrawong Lookout

Recently we visited Fitzroy Falls in the NSW Southern Highlands and we undertook the beautiful East Rim and Wildflower walking track, it’s a lovely escape from the main path and lookout at Fitzroy Falls if you want to escape the crowds a bit.

The walk features some really beautiful cool climate rainforest, you descend into it giving you a lovely fresh wilderness feel. The walk also has plaques setup by National Parks that describe the different types of flora in the area provides valuable interpretation of Australian trees, flowers and plants.

We were also lucky enough to spot a Lyrebird which are quite common on this walk! But you’ll need to walk quietly and have a watchful eye!

We walked to beautiful Warrawong Look Out that takes approx. 30mins from the Visitor Information Centre at a leisurely pace. The view from Warrawong which we have included in this post is stunning, you can see right down into the valley and far south across the rolling Wilderness and plateaus of Morton National Park, not to mention looking back towards Fitzroy Falls! Berowra Creek

Berowra Creek

Happy Australia Day!

Today we acknowledge the First Australians our Indigenous Brothers and Sisters and pay tribute to them as the original custodians of our great nation Australia, this post is being written in Berowra NSW, which in the local dialect means ‘Place of Winds’.

The Traditional nations of the Berowra area were a combination of Kuring-gai and Dharug according to the The Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies (AIATSIS) map of Aboriginal Australia, you can access it here via the ABC website and check your own local area //www.abc.net.au/indigenous/map/ .

Australia has such a rich and diverse Indigenous history, and Australia Day is the perfect day to pause and reflect on this. One of the unique characteristics of Australia, are our unique Aboriginal names, found all over Australia.

One of our local favourites in the Hawkesbury region is our favourite river the Colo River, the word Colo meaning Koala in the traditional local dialect of the Hawkesbury area. The Colo River is a stunning wilderness river that flows through Wollemi National Park. It is a wonderful river for fresh water swimming and there are many wonderful walks there!

Fairy Bower Falls, Bundanoon, NSW

Fairy Bower Falls, Bundanoon, NSW

This week Australia To You wanted to share with you a beautiful bush walk that we did this weekend called Fairy Bower Falls. Located in the superb Morton National Park, we accessed this enormous National Park via the beautiful regional town of Bundanoon located in NSW’s gorgeous Southern Highlands region.

For those of you wanting to do this walk I’d suggest visiting the Tourism Information Centre at Mittagong and asking for advice, and how to prepare including getting the right map, just Google ‘Mittagong Visitor Information Centre’.

You can drive your car into the start of the walk, via the Gullies Road which soon turns into Echo Point Road, the starting point to the walk is quite well sign posted but we would suggest you take a map with you and get guidance to locate the start as this can be a little tricky to find!

What I really want to tell you about is why this walk is so beautiful. The majority of the walk is under canopy, and as you delve deeper into the bush along a well-defined walking track you get a wonderful sense of calm.

Along this walk you’ll cross fresh flowing water, see expansive lookouts south across the magnificent tablelands of Morton National Park. Getting closer to the water fall you walk under a huge sandstone cliff, which at some points you may need to duck your head because its so low. But you get the real feeling of Australia’s ancient past, where you are walking was once under the ocean millions of years ago! Wow, breathtaking and a great thought to ponder!

Soon you start to hear that relaxing and soothing sound of clean mountain water cascading down over the cliff face, which of course is Fairy Bower Falls. My husband and I were very lucky to see three stunning Lyre Birds at this point foraging around for food and scratching the surface of the earth and forest floor.

By this stage you have this perfectly true and serene feeling of wilderness, everything is quiet, except for the sounds of Lyre birds, canopy birdlife and of course the waterfall itself!

Navigating down to the base of the waterfall I admit does require dexterity and I needed a bit of help to position my feet over the rocks and in some cases a little slippery. But once we were down, it was the most relaxing and natural place I’d been in a while. I witnessed great gallons of water spilling over the cliff and creating a virtual mesmerising wilderness shower before my eyes.

We sat at the base of the falls just enjoying the peace and beauty of this very special place and we captured some stunning pictures of which one I have posted on my blog for you to take a look at.

After the feeling of peace and tranquillity had consumed our mind and soul, we walked back along the way we came towards where the car was parked. I must say it is a bit of a trek walking out and some fitness is required walking out, but I found the vigorous nature of some uphill bushwalking stimulating and refreshing in itself and of course stimulated our appetite!

We did the walk as an afternoon walk, and once we’d driven back to Bundanoon we stopped in at Ye Olde Bicycle Shoppe Café in town for a lovely serving of freshly made scones and tea, the perfect way to end our bushwalking and waterfall adventure!

Fairy Bower Falls is a must see stunning waterfall, that is easily accessed and offers a stimulating and vigorous walk to it’s base. A visit here will make you feel truly relaxed in body, mind and soul.
